NBC Technologies Inc. is planning and drilling a significantly technical well for a client in the Southern Alberta foothills.
The well exists on the same lease as an adjacent producing well, 15 meters away.
Project Well Summary:
- Project well is chasing natural gas with a 14% H2S content.
- Planned to a measured depth of 4,670 meters with a TVD @ 3,700 meters.
- Horizontal section is 850 meters including the build section of 150 meters, with a build rate of 25 degrees per 30 meters.
- Main hole is planned to have an angle of 85o to 90o, to be drilled under-balanced.
- Slope of the horizontal section is planned to be 1o.
- Directional plans were created to ensure there was no intersection with the existing adjacent producing well-bore.
Drilling has commenced with a drilling rig supplied by Nabors Drilling.
Hole sizes are 311mm, 222 mm and 117mm.
Casing sizes are 244 mm and 139 mm with the main hole being completed open hole.
The main hole section is the most challenging of all the well formations. Planned to be drilled under-balanced resulting with a final hole angle between 85 and 90 degrees. The target Mississippian formation, a prolific producer of natural gas in the Pincher Creek, will contain an estimated sour gas content of 13.5%.
Under-balanced drilling to be performed utilizing a 2 phase, compressed natural gas/synthetic oil system. The lateral section will be drilled through the porous sections of the Mississippian with a planned slope of 1º.
The planned drilling fluid (2 phase, compressed natural gas / synthetic oil system) will be adjusted in quality to affect a negative pressure inside the drilled borehole.
The methane gas used in the drilling fluid is attained from a local sales line, used during drilling operations, recovered, cleaned up (H2S removed) then compressed and sold back into the sales line.
Geographically the well is located in an open and environmentally sensitive region of Canada and Alberta: In the southern Alberta foothills. The land is dedicated to farming and ranching with an active group of landowners and residents interested and concerned with oilfield activity and drilling operations.
During planning there were several consultative meetings with local landowners, residents, and regulatory bodies prior to any activity to ensure every stake holder understood the plans and possible consequences both during drilling operations and after the well was drilled, when production operations take place on an ongoing basis.
Application for the drilling and Emergency Response Plan approvals were detailed with multiple planning sessions being done with all groups involved. An audit of the processes used was successfully completed prior to spud.
Drilling operations are currently under way and continuing at an accelerated pace.
Currently drilling on day 28, getting close to intermediate point in the well drilling operations are 5 days ahead of the already aggressive drilling curve.
